General Techniques When Cutting the Grass:
Mow at the Right Height: This depends on your grass type and season, for most of you it Kikuyu here in Cyprus. Higher cuts (around 4.5cm) are better for summer heat and drought, while lower cuts (around 2.5cm) are better for spring and autumn.
Sharp Blades are Essential: Dull blades tear the grass instead of cutting it cleanly, which can lead to browning and disease. Sharpen your blades regularly or replace them when needed, there are many service shops available, if your not sure of your local one either do a quick google search or contact us and we will be happy to recommend.
Mow Dry Grass: Wet grass clumps up and creates an uneven cut. It can also clog your mower and make mowing more difficult, tip- turn you irrigation off the night before you intend to mow.
Mow When it's Cooler: The midday sun can stress your lawn, so aim to mow in the early morning or evening, if you can't avoid the midday sun always wear a hat and sunscreen.
Leave Clippings (Mulch): Unless the clippings are very thick or clumping, consider leaving them on the lawn. They decompose and return nutrients to the soil.
Change Mowing Direction: Always alternating mowing direction helps the grass grow upright and prevents wheel rutting.
Fertilization is always a hot topic. what type do i need? when to apply? We off a simple fertilization plan 4 times a year..... see more info on our services page.
Mowing Patterns:
Stripes: This is a classic pattern achieved by mowing in straight rows and alternating directions. It creates a visually pleasing striped effect.
Checks: Mow alternating squares in opposite directions for a checkerboard pattern. This works well for large, open areas.
Circles: This is a time-efficient pattern, especially for circular lawns. Start at the perimeter and mow inward in decreasing circles.
Mow Regularly: Frequent mowing with smaller cuts is better than infrequent scalping.
Maintain Your Mower: Regular maintenance keeps your mower running smoothly and efficiently.
Lastly i want to stress how important regular watering is, your lawn needs to drink like any other plant. if your not sure how much it needs, the general rule of thumb is to get out there and push the grass soil with your fingers, if its dry and hard you need more water, if it's soppy and spongy then you probably have your irrigation set top often or for to long a duration. The right amount is somewhere in the middle for a healthy lawn. Other signs to look out for are yellowing of the grass and insects which often pray on damaged lawns.
